the tpb story (so far)...

1989 - SOAKING UP THE KNOWLEDGE...

Marti grew up on Stewart Island – a tiny blip off the southern tip of New Zealand with a population of 400! [Insert incest joke here lol].

He then moved to Nelson, and finally to Dunedin (“the big smoke”) where he attended Otago University.

Even at uni, he was hell-bent on learning everything he could about business and marketing. And he pro- progressed quickly through the ranks of “business academia”. He completed a BCom (Hons) in Marketing, and a Mcom (Hons) in Marketing. And he even started a Ph.D. in Marketing & lectured in Marketing for several years. But after saturating himself in marketing and business theory, he knew his true calling was to play the game of business in the real world.

Marti tried his hand at many different small businesses. He started a dining club for students, he rolled out the same model in the automotive industry, he had a self-defense business, he even started a cleaning company (Life Maid Easy) and grew it to $150,000 per month (almost going bankrupt in the process). He dabbled in dozens of industries. Always scheming. Always testing. Always refining his knowledge of what works and what doesn’t.

1998 - EARNING SCARS IN THE "TRENCHES" OF SMALL BUSINESS

In 2008 decided it was time to “grow up” and get a real job…

And after a short stint as Brand Manager for iHug – then New Zealand’s third largest Internet provider – he got head-hunted by Honda Motorcycles to be their Marketing Manager. And shortly after transitioned to being the Country Manager of Pirelli Tyres. He leaped into the corporate world with gusto, thinking he’d learn what made BIG companies so big. And he did learn a lot. But he also found himself stifled by corporate bureaucracy and itching to get back into the small business world.

2004 - MASTERING THE 5 WAYS TO GROW A BUSINESS...

Marti pulled the “eject” cord on corporate life. And after narrowly escaping the purchase of a hairdressing salon (he now cringes at the thought of that business model!), he bought an Action Coach franchise from one of his early mentors.

Action Coach was one of the most sought-after and respected brands in business coaching at the time, and their training was second to none.

Marti devoured their material and learned all the intricacies and nuances of their “5 Ways to Grow a Business” (leads, conversion, avg. sale value, gross margin). Then, he applied his deep knowledge of direct re- response marketing to take his little franchise to the moon. Within the space of 2 years, he was ranked #1 Action Coach in New Zealand and #2 in the world!

He also had the pleasure of applying his marketing and business-growth knowledge across hundreds of industries – from hairdressing to mortgage broking, wholesaling, manufacturing, plumbing, electrical, the list goes on.

2013 - FALLING IN LOVE WITH RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION AS BUSINESS MODEL...

Marti coached owners of all different trade businesses – plumbers, electricians, HVAC etc. And he got great results for all of them. But the results achieved by his builder clients stood head and shoulders above the rest. That’s because builder’s have large average sales values, and relatively small improvements give them MASSIVE returns (both financially and in terms of buying back their time). Marti found that by helping builders understand their numbers (so they would reliably make 20-25% on every job), and then plugging in proven sales & marketing systems (to help them win bigger jobs, more often and with higher margins), he could help radically transform their businesses in as little as 3-12 months.

And so, Marti and the team decided to go “all-in” on the building industry. They closed the Action Coach franchise and reopened as “Builders Profitable Marketing”.

2015 - A PARTNERSHIP IS BORN...

At this point, Marti was hiring a lot of students (because they were cheap and energetic!). The 7th student he hired was none other than Owen Chambers. Owen has grown and evolved with the business. He’s now TPB’s COO and was recently made a partner in the business. (If you haven’t met him, he’s a gun!).

2019 - EVOLVING WAY BEYOND JUST "MARKETING"

Not long after hiring Owen, the TPB team realized they offered WAY more than just marketing. In fact, their biggest client wins were coming from streamlining entire business operations – from understanding numbers to optimize margins, using on-site systems to control jobs, using hiring, onboarding & management systems to control teams, and, yes, sales and marketing to win bigger, better jobs at 20-25% gross margins.

By this point, they had invented a complete A-Z “building business operating system” for building companies. So, in 2015, they scrapped the “Builders Profitable Marketing” name and relaunched it as “The Professional Builder”.

The wins kept rolling in…

2019 - PRESENT - CONSTANT REFINEMENT OF THE "BUILDER'S LADDER" GROWTH MACHINE...

Little did they know it then… But, by specializing in construction, the TPB team had created the world’s biggest “development lab” for successful building companies. Every time a member encountered a problem – in sales, marketing, admin, pricing/estimating, on-site systems, variations/change requests, hiring, firing, etc – they’d consult the “brains trust” of members to find a solution.

Normally, they’d get 2, 3, or 4 different solutions from top builders inside the community. So they’d morph them into one elegant system (complete with SOPs, templates, and step-by-step guides). Then they’d put that system to the test in dozens of other building companies. If it worked in good, bad, and ugly businesses, it would get the “tick of approval” and would become part of the “Builder’s Ladder Growth Machine”. If it failed in any business – it would go – back to the development lab to find a more failsafe solution.

And after 18 years of this, TPB has a “building business growth system” that’s virtually bulletproof (although it’s still constantly being refined every day).
